Early Childhood Caries & Breastfeeding Unrelated

Per the ADA News, October 2007, a new study posted by the American Academy of Pediatrics
says that neither breastfeeding nor its duration is associated with increased risk of early
childhood caries. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Rochester
(N.Y.) School of Medicine and Dentistry, the New York University School of Medicine and the
American Academy of Pediatrics.

In the study, Mexican-American children had the highest levels of early childhood caries.

Lower family income and maternal smoking were cited as risk factors for caries in primary teeth.

The authors of the study emphasized the need to target children living in poverty, Mexican American
children and those whose mothers smoke or smoked during pregnancy for caries risk assessment
and regular preventive dental care.
