Relieve Your Anxiety With Sedation Dentistry

Many Americans absolutely dread visiting the dentist. The utensils, tools, and gadgets all look very scary, and the idea that these items will go into your mouth can send the toughest individual into a massive panic. We understand why the dentist can make people feel anxious and fill them with fear. At Sleep Dentists, we have a solution to this problem: sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

dv1617008Dental phobia is a real fear, and understandably, some people just freak out at the thought of going to the dentist. To help ease the process and make the experience as straightforward as possible, we utilize this practice. Sedation dentistry is designed to take the edge off the proceedings, leaving negative feelings at the door and putting patients at ease. Essentially, we give our patients the option to be put to sleep as we conduct our work. We offer the following forms of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide: This is the ideal sedation for those who experience mild anxiety or discomfort. Also called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that fits over the nose. It induces feelings of comfort and warmth, allowing patients to enter a relaxed, calm state. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off within minutes after the mask is removed.
  • Oral Sedation: For patients with moderate or severe anxiety, nitrous oxide might not do the trick. Oral sedation can provide a stronger effect and it lasts much longer. Before you show up for your appointment, we will give you a prescription for an anti-anxiety medication with instructions on how and when to take it. You will need to have a friend or family member take you to our office, since the effects are long lasting. After the procedure, your companion will take you home. The medication should wear off within a day.
  • IV Sedation: This is recommended for patients who struggle with severe dental phobia. This method delivers anti-anxiety medicine intravenously. The medication will place you in a very detached state, so you should have a friend or family member drive you to and from the appointment.

This Sounds Like a Better Choice For Me.

Struggling with dental phobia is not embarrassing, and for those who are afraid of the dentist, we have our sedation offerings to make the experience smooth and effortless. Are you prepared for an easy, simple procedure? Schedule an appointment or call us today. Our doors are always open to Plantation, FL, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderhill, Davie, and beyond.

Ease Dental Phobia and Anxiety With Sleep Dentists

Did you know between 9% and 20% of Americans have a legitimate fear of going to the dentist? It’s very true, as many avoid going to the dentist due to anxiety or fear. This dental phobia leaves people panic-stricken, terrified, and filled with dread. As with any phobia, most know that it’s irrational, but are unable to overcome it. A phobia causes the individual to avoid the situation in any way possible, which is the worst case when it comes to the health and well-being of your mouth, teeth, and gums. So, how does a dental phobia start and are there ways to overcome this obstacle?

Signs and Symptoms:

The symptoms and signs of phobias usually correlate, but no two are every truly related. If you have trouble sleeping before your dental exam, feel a spike in nervousness when arriving for your appointment, feel physically ill when thinking about your appointment, or have an incredible sensation of uneasiness when the procedure is underway, you most likely have dental phobia.

78188806The causes of this phobia can stem from many sources, including:

  • Fear of pain: No one likes to get hurt, and a painful sensation can stop people from doing a lot of activities. This fear could be attached to a previous dental experience that felt unpleasant for somewhat painful.
  • Fear of injections: This one ties into the first a bit (needles hurt), but another aspect comes from the medicine injected. Many fear it may not work or the effect will not kick in before the procedure.
  • Fear of helplessness: Sitting in a chair, mouth open, and having someone prod around with strange utensils can make someone feel helpless or without control.
  • Embarrassment: This one is very simple, but it does take hold of many patients. They feel as if the dentists are judging them, which makes them feel self-conscious.

How to Cope:

The best way to overcome the anxiety and phobia is quite simple. Talk to the dentist and discuss your fears and problems. Ask if sedation dentistry is possible for your appointment. This type of dentistry takes the edge off, usually puts patients to sleep, and makes the entire experience very relaxing. Those within the Plantation or Fort Lauderdale, FL area should contact Sleep Dentists. Schedule a consultation, talk with the experts, understand your problem, find a solution, and get back on track with your oral hygiene.
