IV sedation is commonly used in dentistry to help those with severe dental anxieties feel more comfortable while also aiding those that require extensive procedures or oral surgeries. Unlike other forms of sedation, IV sedation is delivered intravenously. This allows the dentist to maintain better control over the administration of the sedation, catering to each patient’s comfort level. As a sleep dentist, we provide our patients IV sedation in Plantation to make the dental experience more comfortable.
How Does IV Sedation Work?
Despite what many have come to believe, IV sedation is not unconscious sedation, like that of general anesthesia. Instead, you remain conscious in a semi-awake state. This is beneficial for reducing pain, discomfort, and anxiety. While you will be completely relaxed, you are still capable of responding to verbal ques and will feel light touch but won’t feel any pain. In many cases, you won’t remember the procedure the next day. Since you remain awake, there’s little to no risk for heart or lung complications.
What Can I Expect with IV Sedation?
To ensure the safe administration of the sedation medication, the American Dental Association requires IV sedation dentists to have completed programs to meet sedation guidelines. In addition to extensive training to establish the competency and experience needed to handle the procedure, training also includes Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Prior to the procedure, you will need to find someone to drive you home from your appointment as the sedation will remain in effect for some time. You will not be able to eat or drink anything for 12 hours prior to the procedure. It’s best to wear comfortable clothing and don’t wear contacts or oral appliances to the appointment. If you take any prescription medications, you’ll need to discuss the use with your dentist and physician prior to the procedure.
Before starting the procedure, an IV will be inserted into a vein to deliver the medication. The medication will take effect quickly. During the procedure, you will be closely monitored by dental staff and electronic equipment to monitor heart function. Once the procedure is complete, the IV delivering the medication will be removed and you will be able to go home. You will experience grogginess for a few hours until after the medication has fully worn off. You will be able to resume normal activities the next day. In the meantime, avoid driving and using any heavy machinery for 24 hours after the procedure.
